Ever have trouble with the word “witnessing?”  Most of us have!  It reminds us of the pushy person in an airport handing out tracts, or the creepy feeling of someone wanting to “sell” us on God. Say the word “witnessing” and “inauthentic” pops into lots of minds. For some of us, there’s also the associated guilt that we can’t (or won’t) engage in it, even though we know being a witness for Christ is expected of us if we are Jesus’ disciples.

Wouldn’t it be great hat if we could “re-boot” our minds and start over?  Fill the word “witnessing” with a whole different set of feelings and mental images—this time more positive? Maybe even feelings and mental images closer to how being witnesses for Christ actually happened in the biblical story? This is what these next five weeks in March are all about! 

• How can we be witnesses for Christ to our friends in ways that are authentic, honest, and genuine? 
• How can we share our faith with our friends in ways that they will not be turned off? 

All this IS POSSIBLE! In fact, as we’ll discover, it’s as easy as “walking across a room.” For our church wide study series this season of Lent, our small groups will be following the video series Just Walk Across A Room by Bill Hybels, one of the most innovative pastors in America at reaching out to people not yet walking with God. He writes: “evangelism can be as simple as a walk across aroom; a walk across a room is something anyone can do; and nobody is expected to go it alone . . . the Holy Spirit can be relied upon to provide perfect instruction along the way.” 

Just Walk Across the Room is all about building relationships and trusting God’s Spirit.  We can indeed discover how to share our faith in Christ with our friends in authentic ways—ways that feel genuine both to us, and to them. I guarantee if you join a small group for Just Walk Across the Room you’ll be released forever from the fear that “witnessing” is becoming an Amway salesman for God! To be a witness for Christ, we don’t need an Evangelism Superhero cape hanging in our closets!  We just need to take simple steps to “walk across a room.”
