A few years ago, we at First Pres took part in the “Experiencing
God” study. The theme of the study was, “Look
for where God is at work, and then join him”. It is
clear that God is working in Guatemala as statistics show
that Guatemala has one of the fastest growing evangelical
populations in Latin America.
After decades of explosive growth, 30% of the nation claims
to be evangelical, and according to estimates, the church
in Guatemala is growing by more than 15% annually.
Beginning
in September 2003, we began sending mission teams to Guatemala,
the most populous and the most industrialized country in
Central America, which is also the poorest, and also the
one with the highest infant mortality rate in the western
hemisphere. Since then our teams have built water cisterns
to provide clean drinking water for needy families, repaired
churches, built housing for missionaries and local pastors,
conducted vision tests, given away over 1000 pairs of new
glasses to those who needed them, and worked with abandoned
street children and orphans.
Our repeated prayer is that
the Lord make us worthy to serve others who live and die
in poverty and hunger, allow us to give them through our
hands their daily bread, and by our understanding love,
give peace and joy.
Guatemala Mission teams travel several times per year. If you would like to participate, please call the church office at (559) 732-8627.
